Q. What is the high rise pack made of and how does it stay together so well for a day of comps?   I have the KMP high rise pack, but what hose do you use?  3" or 3.5"?  How long is the piece?  Do you use anything to keep the hose from shifting in a day of being thrown around the course?

A.
3" and total length is 4', banded with 3/4" stainless steal banding

Q.
Also, same thing for the hoist pack.  Is it 5"?  Also, how long is it?

A.
4" hose that is cut to a length that with all banding etc added, it is a combined weight of 42 lbs

Q.
Do you replace the nylon slider blocks on the bottom of the sled often or do you sand them down or something?

A. We clean the skids at the beginning of each event, to the point of scraping them with a paint scraper if necessary to get an foreign material out of the plastic. Maybe once a year we turn the skids over and start with a like new surface and at Worlds Keiser brings totally refurbished units.

Q.
Where can I find out what drugs and/or supplements are banned?

A.
Check out the NCAA's website at http://www2.ncaa.org/legislation_and_governance/eligibility_and_conduct/drug_testing.html for a list of banned substances.

Q.
Do you polish the tray that the sled slides on?

A. No and we only use soap and water, with a steel wool and lots off elbow grease

Q.
Do you have to be from the same department to compete as a team?

A.
To compete as a team or relay the members must all be from the same
department. The Tandem competition is the only time that location does
not matter.

A.
The Keiser is sprayed with alcohol and rubbed dry with a towel.

Q. What are the dimensions of the high-rise pack?

A.
4' or 48" oal

Q.
Are you allowed to adjust where the high rise pack is placed on the
ground prior to the start?

A. You are allowed to adjust the position within reason. If you try to
move it too much or take too much time then it is not allowed. The
best advice is to ask for help first rather than risking a penalty!

Q.
How tall is the top rail of the tower?

A.
The top rail is 43" high.

Q.
What is the type and diameter of the rope used to hoist the donut roll to the top of the tower?

A.
(5/8") 16mm kernmantel ez-bend rope

Q.
At World's a few competitors placed their hands underneath the hose paks while pressing the start buzzer with their thumbs. Will this be allowed again?

A.
While this was allowed last season it will no longer be permitted. Competitors may not touch the hose pak until after the official start.

Q.
Why can you not compete in the Tandem and the Relay races?

A. Logistically there are still some questions regarding how the Tandem and Relay events will be run on the same day. For this reason we are not allowing people to compete in both events for this season. That is not to say that we will never allow it, just not in 2005.

Q. Why was the time for the Individuals to qualify for World's lowered but the time for Relay Teams was not?

A. Following WCXIII it was determined that due to an overwhelming number of individuals who qualified, the times needed to be reduced. Competitors are training better and becoming much faster. While the Relay Teams are also decreasing their times, the number of teams that compete has not grown too much. Running Relays takes far less time than Individuals. That was the logic behind the time changes.

Q. Doesn't it seem appropriate to form a 55+ category now that there is a 45-50 category?

A. In order to create a new category we require at least 8 competitors to be entered. This is to guarantee some level of competition in that category. To that end, we do not currently have 8 competitors for a 55+ category. If we do get that many we are open to creating it.

Q. Do the turnouts have to have the liners inside?

A. The Rules are quite explicit: your turnouts must be serviceable and in compliance with NFPA 1971- that means that you can fight fire with the equipment that you wear. See the specific section of the rules that covers this issue.

Q. On the team competition who has to run down the stairs to pass the baton the person doing the hose hoist or the person carrying the hose pack up the stairs?

A. The Rules stipulate that you can choose whomever you wish: it just has to be a legal handoff.

Q. In the team competition where should the individuals put the baton? (just a few recommendations)

A. That depends upon the event. The critical thing is that if you drop the Streamlight Survivor from the top of the tower, you are DISQUALIFIED.

I suggest that you purchase a copy of the DVD from this year's show and watch it about 20 times. You'll pickup more than you'll ever get by reading the rules.
